As a part of the Social Media Week here in London, it befell on me to gave a talk on social media in North London. The organizers chose to name it the "Idiot's Guide to Social Media". Someone said the name is a bit of an insult to the audience, not sure about that but it is worth noting that bot the "Complete Idiot's Guide to… and the "… for Dummies" book series seem to be doing alright with a similar approach.
The event
The audience was made up of entrepreneurs, small business owners and one-man-bands with varying level of experience of social media. I encouraged everyone to ask questions as I find it makes everything more interesting (especially for me as I know the content inside out!).
Every talk I give comes complete with an audience of the usual sceptics and evangelists, my challenge is to balance both factions and hopefully get everyone to agree on the fundamentals. The great benefit of giving talks like these is that you connect with relevant people and make friends along the way.
The content
As you can see from the presentation below, the talk covers the basics principles of social media as well as the big platforms of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogging. I really wanted to stress that social media is not an end in itself, it is merely a method to achieve business goals and I hope the message go through.
I ended with one action point for all: to pick one social network that is right for their business. Focus on this one channel and be great at it before venturing into other platforms. Once you build a community on say Facebook, it's much easier to engage with the same people on Twitter as well as opposed to doing both from day one.

Here's the presentation from the day, hopefully you can pick up something of interest from it. Any questions, you know where to find me!
