My Personal Branding Chat with the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in London

The other week I was interviewed on Personal Branding by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in London, for their membership Link Magazine. I'm a speaker at their upcoming Nordic Career Forum event in London. Here are their questions and my answers (same as above but slightly bigger fonts!):

Why do we need help and training for social media?

The people and companies I help use social media for sales, marketing, recruitment, networking and career purposes. When you get it right it will put money on your bottom line simply by more enquiries, better hires, brand awareness or a higher paid job.

What are the most common mistakes people do?

The belief they have to be everywhere, that every social media channel is relevant to their business. It's better to have a strategy in place where you analyse your value proposition, target audience and online behaviour. You won't find procurement directors on Facebook and you can't sell washing powder on LinkedIn.

Are there any concrete “hands on” tips on how to improve the use of social media?

1. Establish a consistent personal brand so that people googling you see the same picture, tagline, bio at different places on the web. Obviously remove any public drunken photos on Facebook.

2. Add value to your network, share other people's content and help people with real life problems. This is how you establish subject matter expertise.

3. Create your own content, instead of retweeting Mashable all day (which everyone else reads), come up with something original on your own. People value your opinion more than you think online.

I did a similar event last month for the French Chamber of Commerce in London and their Apero Entrepreneurs event.
